A three day course for people who want to learn Avid. Taught by a professional editor our aim is to give you the skills to be able to cut your own projects using Avid. The course is taught on the latest software only, AVID Media Composer in our training school in Soho.
Attending this course will allow you to: Acquire basic skills such as capturing media, rough edit, learn different editing techniques, syncing, media management, customising the interface, titling, audio mixing and conforming. Aiming to give you a comprehensive overview of Avid’s full functionality and usage within production, so you can feel confident that when you brief technical staff you get what you need!
Course outline:
UNIT 1- Intro and getting started
In the morning of day 1 you will be learning about the system setup, hardware connections and familiarize yourself with the Avid SD and HD workflow processes. You will be setting up your own project (hands on) and start adapting user and project settings (command palette, working with bins etc.).
In the afternoon you will learn all about digitizing preparation and capture settings (formats, resolutions etc). This is followed by further hands on exercise where you will capture your video via firewire connection from the camera/ deck into your Avid project. You will then separately import your audio files into the project. Handouts are provided for the morning and afternoon sessions.
UNIT 2 – Practical day of editing
In the morning session you will deepen your knowledge of capture techniques such as batch capture etc. At this point you will also be introduced to Media Management to learn in which ways Avid stores and administrates media files. By mid morning you start editing your video. You will start out sub clipping the video and then sync it up with the imported audio.
After lunch you will be creating a rough cut, assembling your video/ audio in a new sequence in the timeline. You will then be introduced to different editing techniques, transitions, effects and graphics.

UNIT 3 – Finalizing your edit and play outs
This morning sessions comprises of an introduction of sound effects, mixing and conforming. You will work with titles and can spend the rest of the morning finalizing your edit.
After lunch you will finish off the editing and output the material onto tape or DVD. You will learn about different encoding settings according to your output needs (DVD, web, broadcast etc).
Handouts on options for output provided.
Suitable: for people with no or little experience in editing with Avid.
