Discription: This course will introduce editors familiar with Avid to FCP. The course teaches students how to go about editing professionally with FCP in a way that appreciates their knowledge of editing with Avid. The course is taught with a clear understanding of how these systems are different and what advantages there are in FCP for an editor.
Throughout the course students will produce a project with a single, simple, edited sequence in it. With this they can progressively adopt and practice the techniques they are taught. There will be continual group and individual exercises.
Learning Objectives:
1 - Intro and set up
Introduction the FCP interface and how to interact with it.
How to set up a project & key preferences.
2- Working with media in FCP
Introduction in how to handle and manage media in FCP by illustrating and explaining key, fundamental differences from Avid.
Introduction to Scratch and other media folders in FCP.
Students create new folders for stills and music.
3 - Capturing and importing video & audio media into FCP.
How to capture and organize video media from tape into FCP.
How to import pre-captured media from the external hard drive into FCP.
How sample rate convert and import music media.
4 - Basic editing in FCP.
Key differences between FCP & Avid explained.
How to work quickly in FCP without using the trim tool.
Brief look at working with audio on the timeline
5 - Customizing your keyboard
Instruction on how to re-map an FCP keyboard.
6 - Outputting with BITC for a viewing
How to create a BITC viewing output from FCP without a deck.
7 - Sub-Clipping & Markers
Working with FCPs markers and sub-clips in a method that allows for good media management.
8 - Basic Audio & Audio Mixing
How to mix your audio in FCP on the timeline and with the mixer tool.
9 - Text Generators & Titles
How to work with the text tools in FCP.
10 - Transitions & Filters
An introduction to the effects and transitions work methods in FCP.
11 - Edit to Tape (Digicut) in FCP
Outputting a timecode accurate master for finishing work.
12 - Making a viewing DVD with FCP & DVD Studio Pro
Creating a DVD for viewing purposes using DVD Studio Pro software that bundles with FCP.
TUTOR: Hugh Lewis
Hugh Lewis is an off and on-line editor. His documentary and factual work has been shown at Toronto, Cannes and IDFA film festivals as well as on TV around the world including on all the UK terrestrial channels. He has been using Final Cut Pro as well as Avid since version 1 of Final Cut Pro was introduced with Apple. Hugh has experience in training both for FCP and Avid, with students ranging from the inexperienced novice to editors and other media professionals seeking to improve their skill base.
